6 REASONS WHY YOU NEED A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESence

As A spiritual teacher

Social media can seem like a time-consuming, difficult and relentless beast to tackle! Especially as a solopreneur with little or no team (there isn’t enough time in the day!).

However, as a spiritual teacher, coach, yoga teacher or mentor having a social media presence is crucial, especially if what you offer is based online (even if your services are in-person you still need to have a presence too!).

In this post, I’m sharing 6 reasons why you need a social media presence as a spiritual teacher, wellness expert, coach, healer and so on.

1. Social media can help you reach your ideal clients and grow awareness organically.

Over 4 billion people on this planet use social media! That means whatever service or spiritual teaching you’re offering, there will be plenty of people around the world on social media who will be interested in what you have to share no matter how obscure.

Social Media is a tool to reach those people without the confinement of borders. You could think about it like when you go about your day in your world, there are only so many places you go in a week physically to meet and interact with people. This would be a way to organically reach new people offline. Some of these people may or may not be interested in your teachings, courses and sessions.

You are pretty limited on the number of people you can organically reach in this way and your growth may be slow or very limited depending on the population size and general interests of the demographics where you reside.

With social media, you can meet and interact for free with an almost infinite number of people around the world. You can in fact search out and find ideal students and clients using these platforms, making it a powerful networking tool.

2. Social media can build trust with your audience and community.

People tend to take time before making a decision to invest in someone’s services, especially when it comes to something as significant and personal as spiritual teachings, healing or mentoring.

Yes, there may be some people who hear about you via word of mouth or stumble across your page and immediately invest in you. However, for most, they will need time to get to know what you’re all about and build trust with what you say and what you do before they can trust you enough to sign-up for your offerings.

When you post regularly, consistently, with integrity and share generously on social media, people who are interested in you and follow you will be given the chance to learn to trust you. Eventually, these followers will turn into your most loyal students and clients.

3. You can grow on social media without having to pay for expensive ads.

I must admit that it is harder to achieve this now than a few years ago as social media companies begin to really favour paid ads as more and more businesses flock to socials, it is definitely still possible.

Also, don’t forget that you don’t need to sell massive volumes of programs and offerings (especially if you offer 1:1 coaching or readings) to make a significant amount of money. So even if you’re not receiving huge numbers in terms of reach and follower growth, there will still be people with their eyeballs on your content, which is why it is always worth having a social media presence.

To grow on social media without ads, it’s important to have a content plan and calendar (and stick to it!), try out all of the features on the app and follow what is trending, preferably before it becomes too trendy.

You can also diversity by having a presence in more than one place and repurpose your content across the platforms to reach more people (this is especially relevant for short-form videos on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube).

Another really important thing to help you grow on social media is to be social!! Duhhhh! But it’s true. Interacting with your friends and followers regularly in comments and in DMs builds authenticity and trust but also helps you grow and find ideal clients and collaborators. This is one of the most powerful parts of social media and should never be overlooked (and it’s free).

Being a spiritual teacher, yoga teacher, mentor, healer and so on you are likely the face of your business. Your social media accounts will likely be named after you and your face will be all over your page. This can really help people engage, connect and trust you on social media much more than faceless business brands.

4. On social media, you can engage with your audience directly.

You can ask them questions, connect with them and build a real relationship. Similar to what I said above, being social and being an active member of your social media community is crucial. It can help people start to see your business as a living, breathing entity that they love and trust.

You can build real-life relationships through these apps that are much deeper than a wifi connection.

Not only will you connect with clients and students but even business partners and people who you want to collaborate and exchange services with. You may even make real like-minded friends all over the world who you can stay with and visit (this has happened to me and my clients and it is so beautiful and fulfilling!).

5. When making decisions about who to purchase from, people often check social media.

You can think of social media as your storefront. You want to be active, consistent, on-brand and provide great content.

If you were walking down the road and you noticed a shop that looked like it was closed, no one was inside and it looked a bit rough – you wouldn’t even go in let alone buy anything!

It is like this now with social media. A lot of people these days (especially millennials and gen Zers) will check their social media platforms of businesses they’re interested in to get more information and check their vibe. If your account isn’t active and looked inconsistent and off-brand (like a personal account that is only really used for following and consuming as opposed to creating), this will leave a bad impression. People may even question whether you are still in business or not!

While it can be hard to measure return on investment for investing time and money in having a social media presence, you could be missing out on a lot of aligned business by neglecting your social media accounts. This is particularly true if your target market is in a demographic that heavily uses social media.

6. Having social media can improve SEO rankings, increase traffic to your website and grow your emails list

While social media is great, it is not the be-all and end-all of a digital marketing strategy. You don’t own your social media accounts and it could technically be taken away from you at any time (ever had your account disabled by mistake!?), which is why it’s crucial to also have a website and at the very least an email list.

The good news is that social media can help to drive more visitors to your website and onto your email list. To do this, you need to be strategic about what you share on social media. Include a call to action in your posts to direct people to an opt-in freebie or something on your website.

Create content that is shareable so your audience will share it with their audience.

Always include relevant links to your website on your stories and save them in your highlights on Instagram. Link sharing across social media platforms increases brand exposure and influences SEO indirectly. Social media can indirectly increase search visibility and organic search rankings through social metrics and signals.
